San Francisco Renaissance

A term which describes the anti-formalist boom of poetic activity in San Francisco after World War II. During this time, the city earned a reputation as the heart of the poetic avant-garde.

Although it applies largely to poetry, some interpret the focus of the San Francisco Renaissance more broadly, believing it to include visual and performance arts, philosophy, and new social and cultural movements.
